About Me

I was born with a rare condition called Dejerine - Sottas. It means that I have very little sensation, no saving reactions, severe muscle weakness and a lack of motor control. Because of this it was suggested by my Physiotherapist that I should try riding. This is when I first went to Penniwells RDA  purely for therapy.

I progressed from being dependant on a leader & 2 side helpers to being able to ride on my own. This is where my interest in dressage first became apparent. Having begun riding on Flossie and winning competitions I was then very lucky to find my first pony Brockholm Royal Vagabond.

My most memorable moment was competing in Belgium with Brockhom Royal Vagabond – This was my first competition abroad and I won the juniors section. It was a fantastic experience that I will never forget.

In July 2011 I was given the ride on Lambrusco III, owned by The Para Dressage Training Trust (PDTT), and previously ridden by Sophie Christiansen. Thank's go to the PDTT and Clive Milkins for giving me the opportunity to compete on this amazing horse. We competed at the Bishop Burton Para Dressage 3* Senior International in the grade 1a class. This was my first 3* International and we excelled all expectations by being the youngest in the world to win at this level.

Aura taught me so much and together we successfully competed at International level before she sustained an injury in the field meaning she could no longer compete under FEI Rules. She has now returned to Germany and is very happy at the Kasselman's yard as a broodmare.

I have a very special horse joined my team from Elder Klatzko Dressage named Rohan (Roo)

Together we will be aiming for International's, The Europeans,

World Championships and ultimately the Paralympics.

I have been lucky enough to be coached by Sarah Healing. Having been based at Penniwells RDA Centre since 1994 she has a good understanding of working with my disability as well as my horses needs.

Quote from my Coach:
“As Michael’s coach I have watched him develop not only as a rider but as a person and have seen how much he really wants to make this happen – in 2011 he had to undergo major surgery on his spine due to severe scoliosis caused by his disorder – Again through this we have seen determination & grit in order to keep going when things get tough. Michael has been at Penniwells RDA Centre since 2002 and we are happy to support him – He is an inspiration to all the riders at the centre – some of whom I hope will follow in his footsteps in the future. He trains a minimum of 5 days a week as well as helping to promote himself, the sport & Penniwells RDA everywhere he goes. Michael has featured in many articles as a future International Prospect and I am sure with the right support & commitment behind him will go on to achieve all of his medal winning goals.”
